The Jammu and Kashmir state of India has three main territories viz., Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh that differ in terms of climate, physiography, ethnic groups and culture. Doda district is the third largest district of the state (J&K), the total area of this district is 11,691 sq. Km. Lying in the middle and outer Himalayan ranges, the district has mostly a hilly terrain and the district falls between 32o 53' and 34o 21' N and 75o 1' and 76o 47' E.
The district is surrounded by Anantnag district of Kashmir Division on its North, Kishtwar district in the Northeast, Chamba area of Himachal Pradesh in the south, Kathua district in the southeast, Udhampur district in the southwest and Ramban district in the west.
It is an entirely mountainous region with temperate climate located above Chenab valley in middle Himalayan ranges (Shiwaliks). The district has common tree species such as Cedrus deodara, Pinus wallichiana, Pinus geradiana, Picea smithiana, Abies pindrow, Juglans spp, Acer spp, Populous ciliate, Prunus padus, Aesculus indicia, Fraxinus floribunda and Quercus spp (http://www.jkenvis.nic.in).
