The Lady tulip was named after Charles de l’Ecluse, also known as Clusius, a botany professor at Leiden. He was mainly responsible for the introduction of tulips from Turkey to Europe In the beginning around 1570. This bulb, a native of Asia Minor, grew in English gardens by 1636, and made its way to the New World shortly thereafter. A story persists that when the Monticello flower gardens were restored by the Garden Club of Virginia in 1941, Lady Tulips were brought from Edgehill, a nearby estate and former home of Jefferson’s daughter Martha. These bulbs were planted at Monticello, where they have thrived and still flower in mid-April.

Morphology:
Flower petals are white interiorly where cherry red on the exterior portion, giving the flower a striped look as it opens. Stamens are prominent reddish. When fully opened the petals (6 in number) lay flat & looks like star. Wonderful white pointed flowers of the tulip with a pretty streak of pink on the reverse looks beautiful. The inner bloom has a deep purple splotch at the base which defines the colour nicely. The flower’s open and close with the sun so you get the best of both worlds.

Foliage: Gray-green, 6-inch leaves.
Season: Middle spring, for flowers.
Cultivation: Easily grow in a dry location with well-drained soil. Easy to grow but good drainage is a must and the more sun, the better. Allow foliage to die back on its own after the plant has stopped flowering. Will, spread by underground stems and bulb offsets. Few species of tulip doesn’t need extended winter (cold period) to bloom and spread. These are highly drought tolerant.

Current Observations:
The current observations are from Doda (Vill. Nai-Bhallara) region of Jammu & Kashmir. The tulips here are not cultivated; they grow in crop fields by itself. The blooming observed during March. The snowy white flower when opens completely look like star with pointed tips. Grows in moist soil. The bulb of the tulip was edible & eaten by locals. Taste is sweet & little salty.

People are used to grow in garden, One should plant in bacyard
