True Morels: Morchella the edible sac fungi from Doda region

Morchella, the true morels, is a genus of edible sac fungi . These morels have a honeycomb appearance. There are 80 species of Morchella recorded till date around the world.

Morchella (true morels) is a genus of edible sac fungi found in temperate regions. National market value of these species range from 15k -22k per kg. Here in Doda region of Jammu & Kashmir, India grows three species of Morchella. Morchella rufobrunnea (Blushing morel), Morchella esculenta (Black morel) and Morchella sp.



Locally known as Thunthu or Guchhi. It is a wild species of fungi grows between March- Early June in Doda region (Temperate regimes).

Distribution: Himalayas, India, North America, Turkey, China, and Pakistan.
